Randstad was started in 1960 by two students whose imaginations were sparked by an assignment on temporary staffing given by one of their professors. Realizing at that time in the Netherlands there were no agencies that dealt with that kind of work, they got down to business.

In the first year, running out of their two dorm rooms, with only a typewriter and $220 borrowed to connect the phone and buy stationary, the two students were able to turn an operating profit of $4.20. One year later they opened a second office in the Leiden, the oldest university city in the Netherlands. Within a few years Randstad had come to stand for innovation, enthusiasm, and quality. After six years their revenues topped $440,000.
